講題:Language Choices in EMI Classrooms

It’s Not Just What You Teach, But How You Talk: Language Choices in EMI Classrooms

In EMI classrooms, teacher talk is more than just a vehicle for delivering content—it is one of the most powerful tools for shaping how students engage, participate, and make meaning. The ways teachers frame knowledge, invite responses, and signal openness or closure directly influence whether students feel encouraged to take risks and use language for exploration. Different discursive choices can therefore either expand or restrict students’ opportunities for interaction.

To illustrate these dynamics, this presentation will draw on classroom research in Taiwan that investigated how teachers’ discursive choices shape student participation. The study examined three types of teacher talk, monoglossic, contractive, and expansive, and analyzed their relation to student engagement. Results showed that expansive talk was most effective in eliciting student participation, while monoglossic and contractive talk showed little impact.

For EMI teachers, these findings underscore the practical impact of language choices in everyday teaching. By becoming more aware of their own discursive patterns and intentionally incorporating expansive moves, teachers can foster a more participatory learning environment.
